Role Purpose: Everest has an opportunity for a Lawyer to join our global corporate Legal department, based in a branch office of our Irish insurance company in Spain. The role is part of the International segment of the Legal Department covering Everest’s operations in LATAM, EUROPE and APAC. This individual will report directly to the Chief of International Law in the UK. The individual will provide legal and management support, primarily for the continental European branch operations of our international insurance and reinsurance divisions. This includes support for underwriting, claims, and operations. The individual will work alongside the department’s existing continental European lawyer, who is based in the Paris branch of our Irish insurance company. Everest currently has continental European insurance branch operations in France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands as well as reinsurance branch operations in Switzerland. The individual may also be required to provide occasional support to the department’s lawyers based in LATAM, covering insurance operations in Chile, Colombia and Mexico. The successful candidate will be a qualified Spanish lawyer with 6 to 10 years prior experience working in a law firm or in-house legal department and with relevant experience of the insurance industry. The individual will have excellent communication and analytical skills and complement our existing team. Our legal team is dedicated to providing the best possible legal support, and our team members must demonstrate flexibility while working as both technical subject matter specialists and general business advisers. Key Accountabilities:

  • Support Everest’s Chief of International Law in the UK advising on legal, regulatory and business issues with respect to Everest’s European business.
  • Act as the primary legal contact for support of Everest’s Spanish insurance operations.
  • Work closely with the Associate General Counsel based in France to support wider European operations in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
  • As required, provide additional support for Everest’s lawyers based in Chile, Colombia and Mexico covering insurance operations in LATAM.
  • Provide legal support to various operational areas that support the European insurance and reinsurance business (i.e., Claim, Underwriting, IT, Finance, Contract Wording).
  • Work with underwriting teams and product development to support various insurance transactions and claims.
  • Assist in the review and preparation of various legal agreements including non-disclosure and hold harmless agreements, software licenses, outsourcing and services contracts, leases and insurance contracts.
  • Engage in issue spotting, risk assessment, and problem solving on a daily basis.
  • Provide strategic business and legal advice regarding new ventures.
Skills & Competencies:
  • Qualified Spanish lawyer with 6 to 10 years’ experience in a law firm or in-house role relevant to the insurance industry.
  • Experience interfacing effectively with all levels of management and with both internal and external constituents (i.e. underwriters, claim analysts, actuaries, external counsel, brokers, etc.).
  • Candidates must possess strong negotiating skills and analytical ability.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in Spanish and English.
  • Strong work ethic, ability to self-manage and work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects/priorities in a dynamic developing environment.
  • Common sense, good judgment, and solution-oriented attitude toward legal issues.
  • Must be able to approach complex legal issues with a sense of entrepreneurialism.
  • Fluency in German and/or French a plus.
